It has been announced that the Verne is to close as a detention centre at the end of 2017, and will revert to being a 'normal' prison.
We do not have a full understanding of what will happen to the men currently detained in the Verne.
But we do know that unjust detention continues.
Until the full closure of the Verne as a detention centre, the Visitors Group will continue to support people detained by visiting them, helping them as far as we can, and by seeking to raise awareness of immigration detention.
After closure, the group will still provide support to people who have been moved to other detention centres, or who have been released. We expect the group to continue, but we are discussing what the exact role of the group should be. The future of the group will be decided by the AGM in the spring.
Here are some responses to the closure from Right To Remain and from The Detention Forum.
